Mining Engineering
Who does not know that mining is one of the most dangerous professions which one could choose to do for a living? It is not surprising that the minors get retired at an age around 40 because of the incredibly harmful environment which they work in. Anyway, one of the greatest risks for the minors is, without doubt, the incorrect and low-quality mining engineering.
It has already been proved that most of the accidents in a mine happen exactly because of problems with the quality of engineering. Basically, the problems could be divided into two main groups: inappropriate engineering and low-quality engineering. In the first case, the low-quality is also a present factor but it is owed to a human mistake, usually the engineer. Anyway, the low-quality is also present when low-quality and cheap materials are used so that the investor can save money. Fortunately, this kind of activities are absolutely forbidden and regulated by many organizations. After all, we should not forget that sometimes, more than 200 people work in a mine and their lives could not be lost just because ‘somebody’ wants to earn billions instead of millions. Of course in some countries the safety measures are tightened and they are big fines for such arbitrarily acts. One of these countries is Romania and it can easily be called “the country with the best mining industry”.
You might have heard about the last case in which a big mass of mud collapsed and blocked the exit in a tunnel which is located more than 100 meters under the ground. But the worst thing is that there are more than 120 minors in the tunnel and they have been struggling to survive for 30 days. Can you guess what the reason for the accident was? Unsurprisingly, it was low-quality mining engineering.
Yes, it is true that sometimes accidents happen even if everything is precise and the quality is excellent. But in most of the cases, the quality is not good enough, or at least as good as it needs to be according to the national, international and global limits. Everything could happen while the minors are in the tunnel, even an earthquake so the tunnels should be stable enough even for such surprising events. Romania is one of the countries with the safest mining environment and there are hundreds of safety improvements in the tunnels located there.
Right now, you are probably wondering how many people could be saved if the quality of the so called mining engineering was good enough. Well, the simple calculations show that 300 minors lose their lives every year because of inappropriately built tunnels. If they had been built according to the recommendations and regulations, all those people would be alive now. And 300 minors could be saved every single year. It sounds pretty encouraging, don’t you think so?
